NEW STUFF

12UB TOURNAMENT HOSTED BY FGSA IN FLEETWOOD
As you a probably aware, the FGSA has decided to take on the hosting of a tournament at the 12B level this year which, if it is a success, we hope to make an annual event.

I still need volunteers in the areas shown as RED below!

Note that at the I talked to Rocky's Pizza, and they will be delivering pizzas to us to the High School field.  We'll start with (5) pies around 11:30-ish (Only $5.99 per pie!), and they said to just keep calling as we need more pizza, and they will continue to deliver more.  If we sell for $2/slice, this is a huge easy profit.  The downside, is that I need some volunteers to sit there and sell the pizza and soda, and order more pizza when we get low.

I also still need someone to put (3) maps together with directions? We need 1 maps showing where the HS Field is, and where people should go to park. We need another map showing where the BFC Field is and where people should park (beyond LF fence!). And a 3rd Map that gives directions to and from the two different fields.

Does anyone have a son or daughter who would want to make up a big tournament bracket board that we can keep on display at the BFC field on Sunday?

10UA TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Congratulations to the 10UA team coached by Kevin Pavlick and Shawn Moliatu for finishing 2nd in the Hamburg 10UA tournament this past weekend!

10UB TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Congratulations to the 10UB-Red team coached by Eric Robuck, who played in the Schuylkill Valley 10UB Double-Elimination coach-pitch tournament this past week-end.  They lost their first game in the pouring rain Friday night, but then won 3 straight games (including 1 against our 10UB-Black team), before finally losing their 2nd game.  That put them just 2 games away from playing in the championship.  Not bad!

FGSA BUS TRIP TO THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
We are going to have a FGSA bus trip to see the Philadelphia Phillies on Sat 9/13, 7:05pm game time. There are two options. I'm trying to figure out which would generate the most interest. Since I will personally be paying for this event up-front and then recovering my money as people sign up, I want to be sure that we will fill the bus so that I don't lose money paying for empty seats.

OPTION #1 - Gold Glove Tours. $79 per person. Includes the fancy 52-person bus that will pick us up at the Blandon Fire Co, and return us to the same place. Will be decent seats. PLUS it will include a pre-game cook-out tailgate. The tour service will provide 2 cooks that will cook food for everyone.

OPTION #2 - Bieber Bus rental for $20 per person (54 seat bus) + the cost of tickets would be (I'm guessing) about $25 each = Total cost of about $45 (plus you don't get food as part of the ticket as you would with Option #1). I would have to purchase a block of seats for the entire group. Because the season has already started, finding seats for 54 people all in the same area would mean we'd be sitting in the "nose bleeds." This also obviously does not include the tail-gate food, so you'd either have to bring a hoagie or buy food at the stadium ($$$).

Please take the survey so we can decide which option to chose! (You are not obligated to purchasing tickets by completing the survey.  I'm simply trying to judge interest to determine if this is going to work.)

OLD STUFF
OCTOBER COACHES VS. KIDS FUND RAISER
Everyone who was involved with the FGSA last year is probably aware that our Coaches vs. Kids end of Fall season fund raiser was a huge success.  We raised $2500 which we donated to Breast Cancer Research.  The entire concept was initially suggested by our own 12U player, Tori Manmiller.  The event blossomed into what I don't think could be argued as the greatest thing the FGSA has ever accomplished.  Tori has since suggested that each year we raise money for a different cause.  Those with an idea for a new cause should bring their suggestion to a future FGSA Monthly Meeting.

FGSA NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
Last year we also launched our 1st Annual FGSA Night at the Movies where we played "A League of Their Own" right on our own field under the stars the weekend before school started.  The date of Saturday, 8/23 has been officially booked!  Mark your calendars!

RICHARD KASKEY ON CHANNEL 69 NEWS

MAIDENCREEK TOWNSHIP APPROVES OUR ELECTRONIC SCOREBOARD & DUG-OUTS!
Richard Kaskey attended the Maidencreek Township Parks & Recreations Meeting on Thu 4/03.  They have officially approved our purchase and installation of an Electronic Scoreboard.  Barry Spayd placed the order on Mon 4/07.  The lead time is 5 weeks.  Hopefully we'll have it for use in the later half of the Spring season.

Quotes for various scoreboards have been received.  It appears that we'll be purchasing a 5'x10' scoreboard from Daktronics.  A sample is below.  (Our board will be Red with white lettering, with a big paw print in the middle.)  It will come with a wireless control so that anyone in the stands, or a coach can update the scoreboard without anyone being tied to the announcers booth.
Additionally, the township approved our concept of installing "lean-to" type dug-outs.  The goal is to formulate plans to present at either the May or June meeting, allowing us to construct in July/August, and have the dug-outs ready for the Fall season.

THIRTY-ONE FUND RAISER
The Thirty-One Fund Raiser starts today, 4/01, on-line!

Special thanks to Jen Schroeder for offering to sell the 31 products and give the profits to the FGSA out of the kindness of her heart.  The fundraiser will run from now until 4/12 for paper orders, and will begin for on-line orders starting 4/01.  Parents who would like paper copies of catalogs and order forms can contact Jenn at 610-944-0711 or 610-223-8413 or Huyett42@aol.com.  Or visit www.mythirtyone.com/JennS5, click on “My Parties”, then click “Shop Now @ Fundraiser for FGSA”, click “Shop Now” again and begin shopping!

8U ROSTERS NAMED
The following are the 8U rosters for this Spring.

Note that some of the more skilled girls (mostly the 8-year olds) will be "dual rostered" on 8U and 10UB.  That's only necessary in case one of our 10B teams is short on players, which may or may not even happen.  If it does, the 10B coaches may call or email looking for help if they are short on girls for a game.  You are under absolutely no obligation to accept, of course.  For some of the girls it's a good experience "playing up" with the "big girls", and gives them a taste for what they are in for next year when they have to advance to 10U.

FGSA GOLF TOURNAMENT
Per 8U coach, Keith Santangelo, the golf tournament is officially booked.  It is Sunday, July 13 at 1:30, shot gun start at Rich Maiden.  We will be getting the pavilion for free since it is our first tournament.  It is normally $50 to rent.  Keith will make up flyers for the players and also flyers for sponsors in the next couple of weeks.

BCGSL RULE CHANGES
One of the hot topics since last year has been the growing opinion that Berks County girls tend to be behind in skills compared to surrounding counties because we play with restricted rules regarding stealing, advancing on wild pitch/passed ball, dropped 3rd strike, and the infield fly rule.

This is a summary of where I believe we ended up...

Some other notes...

> 8U:  1/2 inning ends after a maximum of (12) batters have come to the plate.  This eliminates the unfairness of some teams having WAY more than (12) batters and girls having to be on defense for much longer than the opposing team.

> 8U:  It was stressed that while the bases will be cleared after every time (3) outs are made, all teams will send up to (12) hitters to the plate each 1/2 inning.  Apparently there were a couple teams playing that if you get 3 outs, the inning is over.

> 10UA & 10UB:  Instead of coach pitch after (4) walks, it will be coach pitch after any combination of (5) walks or hit-by-pitch.

> 10UA:  8 run limit per inning.  (Used to be 5)

> 12UA:  To match ASA rules, only 9 players will be on the field at one time.  (Used to be able to play 4 OFers).

TOURNAMENTS
Most of our teams will be entering local tournaments this year.  You may want to write these down on your calendars so you keep these dates open...

14U REGISTRATION UPDATE

14U doesn't start until June, so plenty of time to form a full team.  Last year we got a large group of 12U girls "playing up".  Plus Muhlenberg doesn't have a 14U level, so we get a bunch of their girls as well.  When all is said and done, we'll have plenty for 14U team this summer.

FGSA FACEBOOK PAGE
If you haven't signed up for our FGSA page on FaceBook, or if you have and rarely check it, I encourage you check in regularly.  You can find all of the latest FGSA info, plus a calendar of future events, and photos of past events.  And I've been posting softball rules trivia, and interesting tutorial videos as I stumble on them.

CHILD ABUSE CHECK / CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK CLEARANCES
Any parent who intends to coach, assistant coach or be a "parent helper" during games or practices must submit their Child Abuse and Criminal Background Check clearances to the FGSA.  If you've submitted yours in the past and its dated within the last 3 years, you do not need to resubmit.  If you aren't sure if you submitted it in the past, or if you aren't sure if it's within the last 3 years, check with our information desk at any open gym.  Do NOT wait until the last minute to do this!  It takes a month or 2 to turn the paperwork around.

Getting the Criminal Background check is easy.  You can do it electronically for just $10 here...
The website says the turn-around is up to 2 weeks, but mine was returned within 24 hours.

Alternatively, you could mail it in using this form...

You need to get your criminal background check completed FIRST to submit for your Child Abuse History Clearance.  You cannot do this electronically for some dumb reason.  It must be mailed in, and requires a $10 Money Order.  And, remember, as I said, you must submit a copy of your Criminal Background check along with this form, so you need to get that first.  Turn around is up to 4 weeks, so don't wait too much longer!
