NEW STUFF
NEXT OPEN GYM - SAT 3/22
The 9th Open Gym of 2014 will be this Saturday, 3/15:
9am to 10:30am - 8U/10U in 5/6-Grade Gym
9am to 10:30am - 12U/14U in 7/8-Grade Gym
10:30am to Noon - Pitchers & Catchers, all age groups in 5/6-Grade Gym

Everyone must enter the building near the 5/6-grade gym.

This could be the last Open Gym of the year.  We have another one TENTATIVELY scheduled for 4/05, but that's only if the temperatures remain uncomfortably cold into April.  I'm optimistic that Mother Nature will cooperate and allow teams to practice on their own outside by then.

LAST WEEK'S OPEN GYM ATTENDANCE:
8U Girls: (13) <-- 2nd most 8U girls we've had this year
10U Girls: (20) <-- 2nd most 10U girls we've had this year

8U ROSTERS NAMED
The following are the 8U rosters for this Spring.

Note that some of the more skilled girls (mostly the 8-year olds) will be "dual rostered" on 8U and 10UB.  That's only necessary in case one of our 10B teams is short on players, which may or may not even happen.  If it does, the 10B coaches may call or email looking for help if they are short on girls for a game.  You are under absolutely no obligation to accept, of course.  For some of the girls it's a good experience "playing up" with the "big girls", and gives them a taste for what they are in for next year when they have to advance to 10U.

FGSA "OPENING DAY" = Sat 5/03
Please tentatively mark Sat 5/03 as a date that everyone will have a game.  That's the day we are looking at for our "Opening Day."  Don't be mislead by the name.  "Opening Day" is just our FGSA all-day-long celebration where EVERY team at EVERY level will have a game.  (You will have other games starting in mid-April before "Opening Day".)  Tentatively this is how the games will be laid out...

8:00am = 8U-Red
10:15am = 8U-Black
12:30pm = 10UB vs. Hamburg
2:45pm = 10UA
5:00pm = 12UB
7:15pm = 12UA

Minor dilemma... Now that we've added a 3rd 10U team, not all 10UB girls will get to play on Sat 5/03.  There just isn't room to add a 7th game.  We're going to flip a coin shortly to determine which 10B coach gets to play on 5/03.

GOLD STAR CALENDAR SELLERS!
Don't forget that you are more than welcome to sell MORE than just 2 calendars!  The more calendars we sell the more we make for the future benefit of the association.  The following people have gone above and beyond...

Jolie Malinowski (15 calendars)
Kamille Orth (9 calendars)
Chaera Frederick (7 calendars)
Emily Kantner (6 calendars)
Hannah Kutz (4 calendars)
Evelyn Reed-Roland (4 calendars)

OLD STUFF
URGENT!!!  APPLEBEE'S PANCAKE BREAKFAST - SAT 4/12
Mark your calendars!  The FGSA Applebee's Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Sat 4/12.  You can reserve your tickets at the front desk during any of our open gyms, or contact Monica Hemmig, purpleunic10062@frontiernet.net

Here's the problem.  We've only sold a handful of tickets so far, and we need to get to (50) tickets sold in advance by the end of this month or Applebee's will not allow us to run this fund raiser.  We can sell tickets at the door, but if we can't guarantee (50) in advance, we will have to cancel this event.  Please buy some tickets, and come get some pancakes!

12U ROSTERS NAMED
Below you will find the tentative rosters for the FGSA 12A and 12B teams.

Understand that things could change based on a number of variables such as commitments to the Middle School team, concussions (Tori), etc.

A number of the players listed below on 12B will be dual rostered, and will be the first to be called if the 12A team needs help.

So what you see below is where your daughter has been assigned as her "primary" team at this time...

KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY INVITE - FRI 4/18
Judy Lawes, Kutztown U head coach, has extended an invitation for any players in Berks County to attend a KU home game onFriday, April 18th.  After the game, the KU players will interact with all of the younger players doing skills and drills with them.  This is a double-header for them starting at 2pm.  Obviously you don't have to attend both games or even all of one game.  Both games should be over around 5-5:30-ish.  With daylight savings, that should be enough time for a little interaction.

This could be a fun opportunity for girls to see what real high-speed college softball looks like.

BERKS CATHOLIC HS VS. FLEETWOOD HS VARSITY SOFTBALL GAME @ BFC - WED 4/23
The Berks Catholic at Fleetwood varsity softball game on Wednesday 4/23 will be played at the Blandon Fire Company field at 7 PM. Good opportunity for our girls to check out what HS Softball looks like.

(Also, this serves as a reminder to coaches that the field obviously will not be available this day for practice or for home games!)

ELECTRONIC SCOREBOARD
Quotes for various scoreboards have been received.  It appears that we'll be purchasing a 5'x10' scoreboard from Daktronics.  A sample is below.  (Obviously we'll pick different colors.)  It will come with a wireless control so that anyone in the stands, or a coach can update the scoreboard without anyone being tied to the announcers booth.  The only thing holding us up from pulling the trigger is approval from the township.  Our goal is to receive the scoreboard, install it and have it functional by our "Open Day" games on 5/03.

SCHEDULING
The BCGSL "scheduling melee" will be held on Thu 3/20 @ 7pm.  Each team must have at least 1 coach represented at this meeting.  This is where you will gather with all of the other coaches at your age level, and work out your schedule for 2014.  Be prepared!  Make sure you have a list of dates that do not work for you personally, and also make sure you check for school events (open houses, school concerts, school field trips) that might leave you with not enough players to play on specific dates.

BCGSL RULE CHANGES
One of the hot topics since last year has been the growing opinion that Berks County girls tend to be behind in skills compared to surrounding counties because we play with restricted rules regarding stealing, advancing on wild pitch/passed ball, dropped 3rd strike, and the infield fly rule.

This is a summary of where I believe we ended up...

Some other notes...

> 8U:  1/2 inning ends after a maximum of (12) batters have come to the plate.  This eliminates the unfairness of some teams having WAY more than (12) batters and girls having to be on defense for much longer than the opposing team.

> 8U:  It was stressed that while the bases will be cleared after every time (3) outs are made, all teams will send up to (12) hitters to the plate each 1/2 inning.  Apparently there were a couple teams playing that if you get 3 outs, the inning is over.

> 10UA & 10UB:  Instead of coach pitch after (4) walks, it will be coach pitch after any combination of (5) walks or hit-by-pitch.

> 10UA:  8 run limit per inning.  (Used to be 5)

> 12UA:  To match ASA rules, only 9 players will be on the field at one time.  (Used to be able to play 4 OFers).

PIAA GIRLS BASKETBALL GAME - FGSA MADE $200
Last Wednesday, Fleetwood hosted a PIAA first round girls' basketball game. The FGSA agreed to run the concession stand.  In return we received $100 from the Booster Club plus 85% of the sales from our Walking Tacos.  We sold (39) walking tacos at $3 each!  If you do the math, that means we made almost $200.  Easy money.

Thanks to all of those who came out to help!  Jennifer Handwerk, Kevin Manmiller, Richard Kaskey, Kathy Kaskey, Julia Kaskey, Earl Hemmig.  And Monica Hemmig prepared all of the stuff for the walking tacos in advance.  The Hemmigs also donated the most of the cost of the purchase of the walking taco ingredients!
The following girls have officially registered...

PHOTOGRAPHER
We will be hiring a photographer this year.  Shawn Moliatu has spearheaded these efforts, and chose Shooting Starz as the FGSA Photographer of choice.  There were 3 selling points to Shooting Starz.  (1) They offer 15% back to the organization so they are an easy fund raiser, (2) They have a whole bunch of interesting items with your kid's picture on it beyond just pictures such as mugs, posters, a "Fat Heads" and more, and (3) They mail everything directly to the purchasers so coaches don't have to be the ones to get everything into the hands of each parent.

TOURNAMENTS
Most of our teams will be entering local tournaments this year.  You may want to write these down on your calendars so you keep these dates open...

14U REGISTRATION UPDATE
14U ... (5) girls
============
Courtney Birckbichler
Mackenzie Hart

Emily Pinnix

14U doesn't start until June, so plenty of time to form a full team.  Last year we got a large group of 12U girls "playing up".  Plus Muhlenberg doesn't have a 14U level, so we get a bunch of their girls as well.  When all is said and done, we'll have plenty for 14U team this summer.

REGISTRATION DEAD-LINE

The registration deadline of 1/24 has passed, but we do NOT turn anyone away no matter how late you are in registering. If you haven't registered yet, but your daughter does plan on playing, please get us your info ASAP.  Girls who aren't registered, can still come to open gyms if they want to continue using them as a "trial" to see if this is something they really want to do.

Also, if cost is an issue, we can work around that as well.  The FGSA has always had a policy that all girls will be given a chance to play regardless of ability pay.

UNDER ARMOUR CLEATS
Dick's is having a great offer on some really sharp *red* Under Armour cleats that really match our uniforms quite nicely.  They have them at the store, but you can also get them on-line...
Under Armour Men's Leadoff IV Low Molded Baseball Cleat - Dick's Sporting Goods

Under Armour Kids' Clean Up Baseball Cleat - Dick's Sporting Goods

PANTS
I understand there were a lot of people concerned about ordering the wrong size pants because we didn't provide samples.  Good point.  However, it still shouldn't be a problem.  We always order extras uniforms.  I'll make sure we order even more extras of the pants of each size than we otherwise would have.  That way if someone needs to exchange for a different size, it won't be a problem.  What we have left over, we'll have for new kids in the Fall or 2015.

FGSA FACEBOOK PAGE
If you haven't signed up for our FGSA page on FaceBook, or if you have and rarely check it, I encourage you check in regularly.  You can find all of the latest FGSA info, plus a calendar of future events, and photos of past events.  And I've been posting softball rules trivia, and interesting tutorial videos as I stumble on them.

DON'T KEEP YOUR BATS IN THE COLD

Remember to take your bat out of the car, and I wouldn't store it in a cold garage either.  You don't want to take a bat that has been in sub-freezing temperatures and then use it to hit while it's still that cold.  That could result in damage to the bat.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Any girl who hasn't previously submitted their birth certificate, should do so before the Spring season begins.  If you aren't sure if you submitted it, check with our information desk at any open gym.

CHILD ABUSE CHECK / CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK CLEARANCES
Any parent who intends to coach, assistant coach or be a "parent helper" during games or practices must submit their Child Abuse and Criminal Background Check clearances to the FGSA.  If you've submitted yours in the past and its dated within the last 3 years, you do not need to resubmit.  If you aren't sure if you submitted it in the past, or if you aren't sure if it's within the last 3 years, check with our information desk at any open gym.  Do NOT wait until the last minute to do this!  It takes a month or 2 to turn the paperwork around.

Getting the Criminal Background check is easy.  You can do it electronically for just $10 here...
The website says the turn-around is up to 2 weeks, but mine was returned within 24 hours.

Alternatively, you could mail it in using this form...

You need to get your criminal background check completed FIRST to submit for your Child Abuse History Clearance.  You cannot do this electronically for some dumb reason.  It must be mailed in, and requires a $10 Money Order.  And, remember, as I said, you must submit a copy of your Criminal Background check along with this form, so you need to get that first.  Turn around is up to 4 weeks, so don't wait too much longer!
